What is Activate?
Activate is run by Kyla Cromey-Hawke in collaboration with Music Monkeys.
It offers after school drama classes for children which develops their imagination and creativity through story telling and active participation.
Who is Activate for?
Currently Activate classes are designed for children between the ages of 4-12 years.
Each class group is separated into age differences of between 1-3 years depending on sign up and/or venue.
Classes for older children will be added at a later date.
What do Activate classes aim to achieve?
Release the imagination of children through the art of storytelling, allowing children to explore and create their own interpretation of characters and scenarios without the limitation of inhibitions.
Encourage children to listen to others and share ideas, to respect different perspectives and be free to follow and develop their imagination.
Develop children’s overall comprehension of situations and increase their ability to develop their knowledge, understanding and communication of feelings such as empathy, sympathy and compassion.
What skillsets will children develop and what will they learn?
Students at activate will learn to:
- Bond as a group
- Develop focusing and listening skills
- Begin to communicate information to peers via dramatization
- Learn basic acting skills such as sensory awareness, stage movement, and vocalization
- Relate movement to music and stories
- Imagine characters and develop movement to create characters
- Work together to create tableaus, pantomime plays, and scripted work
- Learn the basics of storytelling by writing their own short plays
- Relate the meaning of fairy tales and stories to their own lives
- Celebrate the term by performing a variety of performance pieces for parents and friends
How long is an ACTIVATE term / class?
An Activate Term is typically 10 weeks with each class (referred to as scenes) running for a total of 45 minutes.
Classes will be starting in locations around Abu Dhabi this September. For specific class locations, times and dates, please email Kyla at firstname.lastname@example.org or follow the Activate Facebook page for updates.
At the end of each class, an email will be sent to parents with an update on what students have been doing in class along with suggestions of activities to be done at home. The activities are not required but can further develop skills learned in class and potentially bring the entire family together to engage in fun activities.
Will there be a performance or showcase at the end of the term?
Rather than a traditional ‘Final Performance’ to celebrate the end of term, Activate students will instead showcase a variety of very short scripts, improvisation games and other performance pieces they have been working on throughout the term. This enables students to demonstrate to family and friends the valuable life skills they have been developing throughout the term such as: collaboration, critical thinking, innovation, communication, body/spatial awareness, creativity, and more.
Will there be a trial class?
New Students are invited to join our taster class to see what Activate is all about.
